Petition Earl Jones
08.10.09
We have seen countless, large scale financial fraud cases recently in Canada, including: Mount Real; Norshield; Norbourg; Triglobal; Globex; Earl Jones Corp., and most recently, PML; (just to name a few). Convictions resulted with little or no punitive consequences for those criminally responsible. The state of our judicial system, regardless of legislation or sentencing principles, currently allows for those committing fraud ample opportunity to disperse and conceal stolen funds, premeditate an organized plan of escape, and to take advantage of ridiculously low bail settings which provide additional months of freedom in which to continue these evasive manoeuvres. Finally, once and if they are convicted, they serve, on average, a paltry fraction of an already much too lenient sentence. Our Mission is to change the current laws governing “Financial Crime” to more closely mirror those which apply to “Crimes Against a Person,” thereby strengthening the existing and unacceptably weak sentencing guidelines enjoyed by these financial predators. The penalties for white collar crime against individuals need to be stiffened to apply cumulative and consecutive sentences for each individual charge and victim and any associated family assets frozen to prevent premeditated and elusive liquidation. We also support the push for the creation of a unified, Financial Regulatory Body in Canada, empowered with the requisite resources and authority to detect and prevent these massive fraud schemes in the future. We need your support for these initiatives in order to serve and protect all investors, current and future, and reinforce a much needed focus on investor security and market integrity. It is time we demand Canada’s court system take sentencing principles far more seriously and cease in handing down insufficient penalties that encourage white collar criminals to continue victimizing our hard working and most vulnerable citizens. It is time that we, as a society, take an active role in pursuing strong and effective legislation to ensure the justice and security that we all deserve. Please participate in this action and attach your signature in this petition to support the fight against financial crime in Canada.
