Biometrics: Solutions for Security and Authentication

02.11.10

FYI: Webinar on February 15 Space is limited.

Reserve your Webinar seat now at: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/702895155

This webinar will provide an overview of the study of methods for uniquely recognizing humans based upon one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral traits. I will present the fundamentals of biometrics and biometric systems. The course will delve into why biometrics is a solution for security and authentication. Face, gait and ECG based biometrics will be covered. Biometrics and encryption will also be discussed, and the course will conclude with a discussion of future steps.

After completing you should be able to develop an understanding of:

* biometrics fundamentals and systems

* biometrics security and authentication

* face and gait recognition

***********************************************************************************

CEUs (Continuing Education Units) will be awarded to active attendees.

See http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r7/toronto/events/feb1510.htm for details.

IEEE-SA RETURNS TO APWG ECRIME SUMMIT AS TECHNICAL SPONSOR

09.11.09

Conference to Cover Latest Research on Phishing and Other Aspects of Electronic Crime

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) will once again participate in the APWG eCrime Researchers Summit (eCRS) as the conference’s sole Technical Sponsor. The eCRS is the world’s only peer-reviewed technical conference dedicated exclusively to electronic crime research.

eCRS will take place from 20 to 21 October 2009 in Tacoma, Wash., USA. The event will include a keynote speech from computer security expert Dr. Gene Spafford, as well as featured sessions on phishing, trojan attacks, business logic attacks, peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, and other aspects on electronic crime.

All papers presented at eCRS will be published by IEEE and made available through the IEEE Xplore digital library.

For more information on the APWG eCrime Researchers Summit, or to register to attend, visithttp://www.ecrimeresearch.org/index.html.

IEEE-SA LAUNCHES ICSG TO POOL EXPERTISE IN ENHANCING COMPUTER SECURITY

09.11.09

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) announced the Industry Connections Security Group (ICSG), a global effort to pool experience and resources in combating the systematic and rapid rise in computer security threats. AVG Technologies, McAfee Inc., Microsoft Corp., Sophos, Symantec Corp. and Trend Micro are initial members of ICSG.

ICSG is engaging a wide variety of entities—security vendors, industry content contributors (such as banks and Internet service providers), educational institutions and government agencies, among them—in a collaborative forum for advancing the technologies, methodologies and best practices for sharing computer security information. The group will develop, document and promote proposals for enhancing security, toward the goal of producing consensus approaches and perhaps fueling new IEEE standards.

ICSG’s first working group is focused on malware (malicious software such as viruses, worms and spyware). Threats have increased dramatically—from 125,000 unique pieces of malware in 2006 to 1.5 million in 2008 and 1.2 million in the first half of 2009 alone, according to McAfee. ICSG is working to establish more intelligent ways of sharing malware samples and the information associated with them in a way that makes the security industry more effective.
